Life Lately
Lots of going on's here. Except most of them are quite boring. I just finished my last day student teaching at Diamond Fork Junior High in Spanish Fork on Friday. On Tuesday I head up to Riverton High School in South Jordan. It's a 45 minute drive and I have to be there at 6:55 every day. Sheesh. So that will be fun. DFJHS was a blast! It was definitely an emotional roller coaster. But I miss the kids, and they all were great for the most part. Two biggest things I've gotten out of student teaching so far:
1. It is freaking HARD. Matt can attest to this, but it is like 2 full time jobs. I didn't do anything in the past 2 months that didn't consist of lesson planning, grading, hand-out-making, and more lesson planning. I'd wake up, go to school, work work work from 7:30 to 3:10, come home, grade, plan, or go to work, then go to sleep. I ate sometimes in between. Breakfast consisted of half of a 5-hour energy and an excedrin. I know that's probably bad for you, but it was the only way to keep me going ha. There's no one way to teach- you can do things so many different ways. And you HAVE to do things so many different ways, because not every kid is going to get it if you teach the same way every time. I had lots of kids that were just awful test takers, or english language learners, or had ADHD. I had to do something different for each of them, because the point of teaching is to help students succeed!
2. I love teaching, and I want to be a teacher! Despite scaring the heck out of me sometimes, I came out of the past 2 months knowing beyond a doubt that I want to be a teacher. It's an awesome feeling. It's exhausting mentally, emotionally, and physically, but its so rewarding! It only gets better the more you have taught, and the past 2 months have been pretty rough so I know the next 2 months will only be better!
So that's what I've been up to. Matt has had some success of his own, he entered in several of his most recent illustrations into a competition for the Society of Illustrations, and one of his pieces made it!! We are so stoked! Society of Illustrations Competition
He did the one called "Touchdown Jesus" from when he was on a journalism-illustration-photography collaboration trip to Notre Dame and got to do some illustrations for the Universe. Way to go babe!!!!
Other newses... Jacob Shipley gets home TOMORROW!! He's been on a full-time mission for 2 years in Sao Paulo East. I've skyped with him twice, but never met him so I am looking forward to that. When Matt & I graduate, the plan is for both our parents to come down, so I will get to meet him then.
Matt, Brig, and Aaron are on a bowling league, which is kind of neat. I haven't had a chance to go watch them yet, since I am insanely busy, but some day. Matt & Brig's intramural soccer team made it to the 2nd round of the finals and lost in overtime, which was a bummer.
As for other things, we don't quite have lives right now, mostly due to how busy I am. We are both still working, both looking for jobs, both just loving life and each other. We both graduate in April... who knows what will happen then. I'm applying for a long-term sub position for a FACS teacher who is going on maternity leave in May, in SLC, so that would be sweet if I could get that. Matt will be finishing up his BFA final project in May, and then we will see where we will go from there. Who knows?! The world is our burrito!
