Ag Day
In case you didn't know, Orange High School is situated in a small rural town called Hillsborough. Many of the students live on farms, live next to farms, are friends with farmers, etc. So its no surprise that the agricultural classes that they offer are the school's most popular electives (A bummer for me, a FACS teacher). They have a barn at our school, complete with a variety of animals- horses, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, geese...
Once a year they have this thing called "Ag Day." It used to be a day where all the ag students could show off what they've been working on in class, be it goat saddling or BBQ pit-building. Now, its basically this huge carnival where every club in the school showcases what they are all about, and uses it as an opportunity for fundraising. As an FCCLA advisor, our club sold 2-liter and 20-oz bottles of Mountain Dew. And they sold like CRAZY. We sold 2-liters for $3 (a little over double their value- don't worry we had permission from Pepsi), and kids just bought them like it was free candy. It was nuts. There were carnival games, ring tosses, bean bag tosses, water balloon fights, BBQ pork sandwiches & fries, snow cones, face painting, homemade ice cream, chili pepper-eating contest, candy, sodas, cotton candy, basketball contests, pie-eating contest, chainsaw contest (WHAT?!), archery, goat-saddling, BBQ pit building, football, the music club provided the live band, students performed original raps... The dress code kinda was suspended for the day, with every girl wearing booty jean shorts, cowboy boots and camo. I saw lots of boys in cuttoffs too though, so that was definitely strange. It was like attending a big country rodeo/concert/fair. It was pretty nuts, but it was so fun! The festivities lasted first & second period, and then kids went back to class for 3rd & 4th. I was super nervous that come 4th period, my students were going to be so hyped up on sugar that it was going to be a nightmare, but by that point they were like zombies, experiencing the low of their sugar crash. It was awesome. No behavior problems at all- ha!
Here's some pictures from the day:
Unofficial "competition" of who could pack the most sodas in their fridge the night before:
Teacup pig for sale!
Our Soda Stand
The Chainsaw competition, afterwards
The barn
The Music Club
Display of yard tools
Tractor show
